Happy Easter Everyone!

In an earlier post I talked about our new full-grown chickens that we have(2 are laying eggs every other day now:)
Well , I also talked about getting chicks to raise so that by August we will have enough eggs coming to feed our family...maybe more even. Today was the day to pick half of my chick order. I got 6 arcana's, they lay the green and blue and light brown speckled eggs(real Easter eggs). I am so excited and so are the kids! They are the cutest little buggers you have ever seen. They peep and then sleep and then eat and then poop and then peep...just like little babies...how sweet. I will be picking up the other 6 chicks( black astrolorpes...they will be black at birth...then solid black with a green sheen in the sun and a red top knot as adults) on Tuesday. The chicks will need 6-8 weeks in the house, in a brooder box, until they aer fully feathered and can be eased into the coop with the other 3. I read up about raising chickens and found that you don't need to get a rooster(they can be mean) to motivate the laying...eventually one hen will stop laying and take over the rooster roll , without the mean streak...perfect! I feed the chickens our compost, they can eat almost anything so I don't have to pick out much. Great way to reduce the garbage problem around here without getting a pig( we might try that someday too...who knows???). The kids love to go out and see if there are eggs in the chicken barn The only strange thing so far is that they won't lay in the nesting boxes, they make nests on the floor(the poopie floor) and lay there, oh well I wash the eggs anyway and haven't seen any poop on them yet but we have to be careful not to step on the eggs when we go into the barn:) This will be a fun adventure I am sure! Happy Easter everyone.
