The yard and the coop are now finished! We put the finishing touches on the nesting area on Monday and
then went to our friends house for family home evening campfire and to pick up 3 full-grown chickens. I think there are 2 Rhode Island Reds and one Buff
orpington(but I could be wrong????) The chickens were pretty traumatized the first night and the light colored one really looked upset...it wouldn't move and clucked pretty loud at us if we tried to touch it. The other dark ones didn't seem terribly displaced but still not really friendly. That next morning I got some straw for the inside of the barn and their nesting boxes. As I was trying to fill the places with straw I didn't realize the chickens would be so
anxious to get out...I left the door jarred open...oops! One chicken ran out and made for an escape...clucking wildly as Max,our 115 pound
Rottweiler/lab , ran in pursuit. Max was barking and chasing...the chicken was clucking
erratically and I was screaming "Max you had better not eat that chicken!" In an instant the
chicken just stopped???Max
stopped, looked at it, sniffed it and walked away. I carried Ms. chicken back to the barn and the the crisis was over. I thought after this incident the
chickens would never lay any eggs...too much drama. Low and behold the next afternoon I found one beautiful brown, organic egg in a nesting box. Maybe we scared it out of her? She has not laid another yet but we are waiting ...patiently. 3 chickens will not feed us enough eggs so we are ordering 12 more(in chick form) They will be fun to raise in the garage and then in 4 months we should have more egg layers!!! I am shocked at how fun they are to watch and how soft they are. I never
thought I would enjoy holding a chicken, but I must say I
thinketh their poo
stinketh!!! We have not named them yet but the kids are working on it...soon...how do you know who is who anyway, guess we will find out?
